1. Give us a brief description of what you are doing currently.

- I am a 3rd year undergraduate at NUS, majoring in Chemistry.

2. Do you believe that having confidence in whatever you do is important? Yes/ No (Please explain).

Yes. Having confidence in yourself and your endeavours are the first step towards realising your goals. Confidence comes from knowing you have the necessary skills and made adequate preparations, and is the key component that will drive you to take the first step.

3. Besides academic knowledge, is there anything else you feel you have learnt from SmartLab? And, how has it benefited you?

I have learnt to be more vocal and to actively seek clarifications on any doubts I may have. This has served me well during my undergraduate studies where learning is much more independent and requires much more critical thinking. More than anything else I value the friends I have met at smartlab, with whom I can share a laugh even years after graduation.

1. Give us a brief description of what you are doing currently.

I have just completed my exams for my final year, waiting for results to be released. If all goes well, will be going over to imperial college London this August to pursue masters in finance.

2. Do you believe that having confidence in whatever you do is important? Yes/ No (Please explain).

Yes, having confidence is definitely important. Knowledge is not enough in today's world. The difference between a leader and a follower is at times, confidence. A leader has confidence in himself and is able to convince his subordinates to be confident in his leadership. You may be the most knowledgable person around, but if you display signs of insecurity and uncertainty when you perform tasks, how are people going to have confidence in you and follow your lead.
On a personal level, confidence is an enabler. With confidence in ourselves, we not only know, but are able to act on what we know and make a difference, be it to our own lives or to those around us.

3. Besides academic knowledge, is there anything else you feel you have learnt from SmartLab? And, how has it benefited you?

Smartlab encouraged me to speak up when in doubt, and question what is being taught, thereby learning even more in the process. Instead of being a sponge in class, I am engaged.

1. Give us a brief description of what you are doing currently.

I am currently serving NS and I hope to be able to read Medicine at NUS.

2. Do you believe that having confidence in whatever you do is important? Yes/ No (Please explain)

Definitely. Confidence is what lets us take the first step towards our obstacles and gives us the courage to carry on.

3. Besides academic knowledge, is there anything else you feel you have learnt from SmartLab? And, how has it benefited you?

I learnt to trust in my own decisions better through practise. The teacher was also able to present new scenarios to test our understanding and this encouraged me to think more deeply. This helps me in solving real-life problems, when we often have to look beyond the surface before coming to a conclusion.

3. Besides academic knowledge, is there anything else you feel you have learnt from SmartLab? And, how has it benefited you?

Smartlab has given me the critical thinking and problem solving skills needed to tackle challenges. This has enabled me to think critically and tackle challenges independently.

1. Give us a brief description of what you are doing currently.

Upon the release of my A level results I have been trying different part time jobs. Currently working as part time coach for table tennis at plmgs and monfort primary school. Not yet decided on which course or which university I am going because am still waiting for the results from some courses and scholarships.

2. Do you believe that having confidence in whatever you do is important? Yes/ No (Please explain)

Yes. Confidence is the start of success because being confident gives you a calm mind that allows you to think on the spot and perform better. Regardless of it being an academic exam or sporting competition, confidence is necessary. But it must also but noted that overly confident can be harmful at times if it becomes complacency.

3. Besides academic knowledge, is there anything else you feel you have learnt from SmartLab? And, how has it benefited you?

Going for weekly tuition gives me a peace of mind. Being an athlete sometimes it is common and inevitable that I will miss out on lessons being conducted in school. Going to smartlab makes me feel reassured that I will be able to catch up with my workload on weekends.

2. Do you believe that having confidence in whatever you do is important? Yes/ No (Please explain)

Yes. I believe having confidence is important as it is the first step towards winning the battle. Without confidence, it is half the battle lost, without even starting the fight. However, I believe confidence comes with knowledge and it is important to keep the mind open towards learning. Learning is a life-long process and should not have an end-point.

3. Besides academic knowledge, is there anything else you feel you have learnt from SmartLab? And, how has it benefited you?

I think Smartlab gave me hope and confidence. Smartlab never gave up on me and showed me that life does not give up on you, even if the Singapore education system did. I do not think I would have been able to achieve what I have today, if I had studied in the local university – in a field that I did not enjoy.

1. Give us a brief description of what you are doing currently.

Teaching piano to children part time, waiting for university application results to be out.

2. Do you believe that having confidence in whatever you do is important? Yes/ No (Please explain)

Believing that one is able to achieve what one sets out to do gives a sense of drive and motivation. Someone who believes in himself is not easily discouraged even in the face of adversity, because there is the hope that success is just around the corner. To observers, a person who has confidence is also perceived to be a lot more reliable then someone with similar qualifications and life experience without confidence in himself. Additionally, confidence is a very attractive quality that draws friends to those who exude it.

3. Besides academic knowledge, is there anything else you feel you have learnt from SmartLab? And, how has it benefited you?

Mr Tan, this is going to sound very cliched but I really mean it haha :) I was very inspired by Mr Tan's disposition and working attitude. Though intangible, it could be easily felt in the way that Mr Tan was always able to turn difficulties or problems into manageable situations. Because of his confidence in nailing things down and getting things done, and his constant encouragement that we could do it, he was able to make me feel that things were going to be okay during the stressful A level preparations. I felt inspired to have an equally positive attitude so that I could also bring some comfort or joy into other people's lives.

1. Give us a brief description of what you are doing currently.

I have just graduated from my course in university, and I am taking a short break to travel around a little before embarking on the next phase of my life.

2. Do you believe that having confidence in whatever you do is important? Yes/ No (Please explain)

Yes. Having confidence in whatever you do is important, because it could ultimately determine the degree of success in whatever you do. Confidence brings about a positive attitude, which would increase your appetite for risk. By being more risk-taking, you would be able to step out of your comfort zone and probably reap the benefits of exploring the unknown.

3. Besides academic knowledge, is there anything else you feel you have learnt from SmartLab? And, how has it benefited you?

One important lesson from SmartLab’s teaching methodology is that doing what everyone else is doing would put you in a safe position, but you have to be different and even better than everyone else in order to stand out from the masses. From this, I have learnt to be less conventional and to constantly think out of the box. It allows me to have a different perspective towards life, and it has made me more open-minded towards different experiences. This would benefit me greatly in the long run, as it would increase my adaptability and flexibility.

2. Do you believe that having confidence in whatever you do is important? Yes/ No (Please explain)

Yes. Without confidence, you will not dare try or do any new things. Thus, you will only be in your comfort zone and might not discover more of yourself and also not knowing there might be more things that you might be interested off and be successful with it.

3. Besides academic knowledge, is there anything else you feel you have learnt from SmartLab? And, how has it benefited you?

I find that it helps me to be more discipline. Since its a private school and friends might be an influence for example coming back from lunch late. Smart lab makes me realized that we need to stand on our own at times.

1. Give us a brief description of what you are doing currently.

I’m currently doing my 2nd year in TP and have just started a new semester with much tougher subjects like marketing and accounting for my course Hospitality and Tourism Management. I’m also in the midst of consideration after being offered a scholarship when I completed year 1 by NATAS which will make a big step to my future. I’ve also taken up a cross disciplinary subject, Contemporary Issues-Global Perspectives which I am offered to go to Germany for a week in the course of this study during the June holidays. I’m having fun and studying hard in school like any other poly students. I’m enjoying what is planned for me now.

2. Do you believe that having confidence in whatever you do is important? Yes/ No (Please explain)

There are definitely some drawbacks in certain things I do and I have to deal with it rightfully. Confidence is important in our life, but if hope and courage come along, confidence is just a bonus for us, like an assistance to attain what we are aiming for. Confidence comes with courage, and being confident all the time does not bring immediate success. I met a couple of confident people along my way in life, and it is pretty astonishing when these are the people who tend to misuse confidence. I would give in my best and display all my courage in whatever I do. Be confident, in a right mind and stay humble, keep your profile low as excessive confidence often leads to failure. Before you know, others might have already outrun you. Stay low and firm, not too confident.

3. Besides academic knowledge, is there anything else you feel you have learnt from SmartLab? And, how has it benefited you?

It’s been about 2 and a half year since I left Smartlab. One thing I learn is that it is possible to be an independent learner. While teachers in secondary schools sprouted sarcasms and puns about students not being able to achieve desirable results, Smartlab is a place for these students. It’s like a rehabilitation centre (a fun one though), where I get to take things slow, feel my enthusiasm and goal once again. The teachers treated me like a young adult and I am able to nurture from there. It benefited me in a way that I realised that in life, we get to control our future, and every single second spent in a new studying environment (SmartLab) is an opportunity for you to turn you screwed up life around, and that’s when you see light coming to you.

Yes. Otherwise what's the point on doing it if you don't intend to do it well? Without confidence, you'll probably be doing a half-assed job that you might as well not do at all if that's the case. Better to have confidence and finish it in one shot.

3. Besides academic knowledge, is there anything else you feel you have learnt from SmartLab? And, how has it benefited you?

I learnt to not take things for granted and to not waste time. It taught me how to manage things better now.

3. Besides academic knowledge, is there anything else you feel you have learnt from SmartLab? And, how has it benefited you?

I learnt that if you set your mind to anything, you can do what is right in front of you with a desire which will help you do it to the best of your ability.

2. Do you believe that having confidence in whatever you do is important? Yes/ No (Please explain)

If you have no confidence in what you are doing, then you might as well not do it in the first place. You will only feel lost and confused, and life is too short for you to feel this way all the time. Thus, yes, it is important for one to have confidence in what he/she does.

3. Besides academic knowledge, is there anything else you feel you have learnt from SmartLab? And, how has it benefited you?

I’ve learned that:
-not all teachers suck.
-School is pretty much teaching you nothing. And with intensive tuition from smartlab, I can still make it during O levels LOL.

1. Give us a brief description of what you are doing currently.

After graduating with a Bachelor of Speech Pathology, I worked for 2 years as a speech pathologist with children who have speech and language difficulties. During that period, I developed an interest in using music to encourage speech and language development, particularly in children with Autism. I decided to further my studies and am currently doing my Masters of Music Therapy at the University of Queensland.

2. Do you believe that having confidence in whatever you do is important?

The cliché that goes “whether you think you can or you can’t, you’re right” has so much truth to it. It is the confidence in yourself that will drive you to achieve greater things.

3. Besides academic knowledge, is there anything else you feel you have learnt from SmartLab? And, how has it benefited you?

Tony showed me what it meant to be dedicated to what you do. It was his dedication to tutoring us that helped achieved the grades that I did in my exams, which then allowed me the options in choosing my career path. Looking at how SmartLab has expanded from the little office in Bishan to what it is now, has definitely showed me how much dedication and hard work can do.
