Fees Related Questions

1. What are the fees that needs to be paid at the point of registration?

Registration fee $30. Refundable deposit $100. Tuition fees for the calendar month, pro-rated. [Please refer to timetable for fees for each subject and level.]

2. Why is it necessary to pay $100 deposit?
The deposit is refundable when the student stops tuition. 2 weeks notice must be given. The purpose of the deposit is to ensure that students who no longer wish to continue tuition will inform us. As we stop accepting new students once a class has reached a maximum class size, there are frequently students on the waiting list. If students who no longer wish to continue did not inform us, we will continue to keep the place for them in vain, and keep other students waiting needlessly.

3. Is the deposit $100 per subject?
No, it is $100 per student.

4. Are fees collected every 4 weeks or every calendar month?
Fees are collected at the beginning of the calendar month. Late payment will incur penalties.

5. How much fees to pay if there are 5 lessons in a month? What if there are Public Holidays?
Fees will be pro-rated. For example, suppose the tuition fee is $100 per 4 weeks. If in a month, there are 5 lessons, the fee will be $125 for that month. If there are public holidays in that month and there are only 3 lessons conducted, then the fee is only $75.

6. What if a student joins in the middle of the month?
Fees will be pro-rated based on when the student joins in. For example, if the student joins in when there is only 1 (or 2 or 3) lesson left in that month, then he only pays for 1 (or 2 or 3) lesson for that month.

7. What modes of payment are accepted? Can pay by cheque/credit card / NETS?
Payment by cash and cheque only. No credit cards, no NETS. For cheque payments, please pay to "Smartlab" and write the name of the student on the reverse side of the cheque.

1. What are the qualifications of the teachers?
All are minimum graduates. Most are Honours degree / Masters degree or scholarship holders. All the teachers at SmartLab® use the same set of teaching material and system developed by First Class honours degree holders from Cambridge University to ensure consistently high standards. Click here to see the qualification of the teachers.

2. How old are the teachers?
All range from mid 20s to mid 30s.

3. Which teacher is better?
As all the teachers use the same teaching method and materials, it does not matter which tutor teaches them. All our tutors are enthusiastic and keen to help their students improve. In addition, fortnightly group consultations among teachers teaching the same subject and the Head Of Department (Tony, 1st class honours Cambridge graduate in Engineering - Science and Hazel, 1st class honours Cambridge graduate in Mathematics - Mathematics) ensures consistency and high standards.

Questions on Lessons / Teaching Methods

1. Are students given homework?

Students will be given work to do during class, as well as given homework. Their homework will be marked by our teachers to check their understanding, correct application and clear and logical presentation. As a guide, the homework should take them about 1 to 1.5 hours to complete.

2. What is the maximum class size?
We keep to a small Teacher-Student Ratio of 1:8.
The class limit for JC level is 12. JC students are more independent and do not hesitate to ask questions, resolve doubts and clarify concepts, even outside of the stipulated tuition time.

3. Are your lessons according to school syllabus?
Yes. Our lessons are developed based on school syllabus (as determined by MOE or Cambridge Exam Board). Some better schools go beyond the syllabus requirement to stretch their students. As we have years of experience teaching students from these schools, we have included such additional material in our lessons and notes for our students' reference. Such materials are not included in their textbooks.
